Albert Lortzing
Leipzig is a city of music. However, many people do not realise that it was not only composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Richard Wagner and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy who lived and worked here. Albert Lortzing also had a close connection to Leipzig. He made his debut as an actor and singer here and worked as an opera director at the city theatre for several years. The city inspired him to write his best-known operas »Zar und Zimmermann« and »Der Wildschütz«, which premiered in Leipzig and enjoyed great success.
Through his work in Leipzig, Lortzing was able to develop his career as a composer and conductor and make his works known throughout Europe. His close connection to Leipzig is still honoured in the city today. Lortzing admired the city's cultural atmosphere and musical heritage. However, he first had to get used to the drinking habits of the locals ...
»I have the love of the public to a high degree and have - unfortunately - only too many acquaintances outside the theatre, as the drinking here is almost too bad. I'm popular, so people are looking for me ...«
