With stirring music and arguably the greatest love story in the literary canon, »Romeo and Juliet« is one of the most popular ballets of all time. The tale of young, impetuous love and deep-seated, age-old hatred has been adapted countless times for stage, film and television.
In her first work for the Leipzig Ballet, American choreographer Lauren Lovette focuses on the heart of the tragedy: the relationships and feelings between the characters we all know and whose familiar story we are privileged to follow. In Shakespeare’s compelling drama, love in all its forms – romantic, platonic, familial – becomes the catalyst for the greatest happiness and the deepest pain. Thomas Mika’s set and costume design offers a timeless perspective on love, tragedy, friendship and loss, interweaving the magic of the story with that of the theatre itself.
