Biography
Tobias Engeli studied cello in Winterthur/Switzerland and Hamburg. He then studied conducting with Prof. Christof Prick at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama. During this time, he conducted the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, the Hamburg Baroque Orchestra and various independent opera productions. He later made guest appearances with the Landesbühnen Sachsen, the Darmstadt State Orchestra, the Baden Staatskapelle Karlsruhe, the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, the Augsburg Philharmonic and the Schleswig-Holstein Symphony Orchestra. Before graduating, he worked as a répétiteur and conductor at the Darmstadt State Theater. This was followed by conducting engagements at the Munich Biennale and close collaboration with the Bonn Opera and Beethoven Orchestra as a pianist and conductor. From the 2009/10 season, he was principal conductor and deputy GMD at the Theater Plauen-Zwickau. In 2012/13 he was a permanent guest at the Chemnitz Opera House.
He has been First Kapellmeister at the Musikalische Komödie Leipzig since 2014/15 with new productions of »Im weißen Rössl«, »Carmen« (ballet), »The Pirates of Penzance«, »Capriolen«, »Alice in Wonderland«, »Die Herzogin von Chicago«, »Das Feuerwerk«, »Spiel mir eine alte Melodie« and »Die Juxheirat«, among others. At the opera house, he directed the production of »Van Gogh« and conducted performances of »The Nutcracker«. In 2022/23 he was acting music director and chief conductor of the Musikalische Komödie.
