Biography
Born in Cyprus. Irish citizen, resident in Germany for 35 years. 2012 ECHO Klassik award in the category best DVD production of the year for his production of Wagner's "Ring des Nibelungen", which he created at the Lübeck Theatre. 2011 German Record Critics' Award. Multiple awards from the trade journal "Opernwelt", including in the category "Best Production / Best Director" for Mozart's "La Clemenza di Tito", Lortzing's "Zar und Zimmermann" in Bremen (2006) as well as for "Siegfried" (2009), "Götterdämmerung" (2010), "Parsifal" (2012) and "Tristan und Isolde" (2013) in Lübeck. 1986 - 95 Director at the opera houses in Bonn and Cologne. Since then internationally active director. 18 productions at the Lübeck Theatre, others in Berlin (Komische Oper and Deutsche Oper), Frankfurt, Nuremberg, at the Houston Grand Opera, Taipei National Theatre, St. Gallen Theatre, Bern City Theatre, Landestheater Linz, Opéra National de Bordeaux, at the Dresden Music Festival, Handel Festival Halle and at Expo 2000 Hanover. 2002 world premiere of the reconstructed version of Verdi's "Gustavo III" at the Göteborgs Operan and 2004 German premiere in Darmstadt.
Productions of "Rigoletto", "The Canterville Ghost/Pagliacci" and "Der Rebell des Königs (Cinq-Mars)" at the Leipzig Opera. In 2024/25: »Norma«
